Born in Syracuse, New York in 1948, James Nachtwey graduated from Dartmouth College, where he studied Art History and Political Science. He has devoted himself to documenting wars, conflicts, and critical social issues in more than 30 countries. He has been a contract photographer with Time since 1984. A highly recognized photographer, he is a five-time recipient of the Robert Capa Gold Medal. Nachtwey is the author of Pietas (Contrasto, 2014), Inferno (Phaidon, 1999), and Deeds of War (Random House, 1992).
